How to be active in Barbados
Barbados is known for its peace and tranquility. It is a place where vacationers from around the world flock to take a break from their stressful lives and blow off steam. But as calm and relaxing as the atmosphere is, this island is also a big draw for sports enthusiasts who want to play in the warm salt water.
Whether you enjoy land or water activities, there is no lack of recreational pleasures in Barbados. Water sports, of course, will forever be the most popular form of recreation on the island, and there are plenty to choose from. Surfing and boardsailing are popular on the south coast where the conditions are perfect and the waves are just high enough. Kite sailing and paragliding are also gaining popularity and are great ways to get a better view of the coast. Like most sunny destinations, wave running is quite popular and jet skis can be rented at shops along the beaches.
In the calmer waters along the west and southwest coasts, vacationers can get a better view of the underwater marine life and flora by snorkeling or scuba diving. More experienced divers can rent equipment and explore the bays for themselves. Inexperienced travelers may want to join a group or hire an instructor themselves and get lessons before getting into water. The ocean surrounding the west coast is also perfect for kayaking and sailing. Boats can be chartered privately, or you can hire someone to take you out. You may also want to take advantage of the excellent fishing in Barbados. Common species include tuna, marlin and wahoo.
If you do not want to spend all your time in the water, there are plenty of recreation activities on land as well. Head out to the green for a round of golf. Rent a bicycle and tour around the region you are staying in. You can even rent a horse and take a ride down the beach. Team sports are also very popular in Barbados, and you can choose to play one yourself or become a spectator. Try learning to play cricket or take in a match at the Kensington Oval – the island’s main stadium. You can also get tickets to a tennis match, polo game or horse race.
