Discovering Barbados
Explore what the island has to offer
Barbados has traditionally been a destination for vacationers looking to relax in the sun, but there is far more to the Caribbean island than its warm sandy beaches. No matter the length of your stay in Barbados, you will never run out of things to see and do.
Barbados has a rich history and still retains many of its historical landmarks. There are buildings and homes still standing on the island that date back to the 16th century. The British, Spanish and Italian influences can be seen in the different styles of building, from wooden houses to towering castles. The museums on the island are almost as historical as the artifacts contained within their walls. The Sunbury Plantation House, for example, is nearly 300 years old.
Sightseeing is a must in Barbados if you really want to get to know the island. You can sign up for a guided tour, or rent a car and explore the island yourself. One great tourist attraction is Ocean Park, which is home to some of Barbados’ most fascinating and colorful marine life. You may also want to visit one of several nature preserves or botanical gardens.
Recreation and leisure are both very important in Barbados, and there is no end to the number of sports and activities you can watch or try out for yourself. Water sports are particularly plentiful on the island, from parasailing to scuba diving. There are plenty of shops throughout the island to rent equipment, and inexperienced vacationers can sign up for lessons for just about any sport. There are also many spectator sports in Barbados, and vacationers may want to take in a game of cricket or road tennis.
Vacationers who are more adventurous may want to look for more unique experiences to give them a thrill. While some Caribbean destinations offer visitors the chance to swim with dolphins, in Barbados vacationers can get up close to sea turtles. Individuals who do not have a fear of heights may want to try out kite surfing for an exhilarating way to view the coastline.
