Find the best in local wares and international luxuries

Barbados is increasingly growing as a tourist destination because of its warm tropical weather and beautiful sandy beaches. From historical sites to water sports, this island paradise has a lot to offer tourists. But Barbados is also becoming a tourist hot spot for an entirely different reason - fabulous shopping.

Shopping may not be the first thing vacationers think about when they plan a vacation south of the border, but the shops and department stores that fill Bridgetown and the outskirts of the island’s capital are hard to ignore, particularly when merchandise is tax free and prices are significantly cheaper than in North America. Make sure you are aware of what your duty-free allowance is before you purchase too many items, or you may be penalized when you go through customs on the way home.

Bridgetown is the largest city in Barbados, with a population of more than 60,000 people, and it is the most popular shopping destination. The main street – Broad Street – is lined with large department stores and small shops that sell everything from jewelry to electronics, perfume and clothing.

Located just outside Bridgetown is the Bayshore Complex. This center was built in the early 1800s and originally housed the local police station. Today it is home to designer boutiques, restaurants and gardens.

Visitors who are looking for a more unique shopping experience may want to visit Pelican Village. Less of a village and more of a giant shopping center, Pelican Village is the place to go if you’re looking for authentic local goods and handcrafted items. Vendors from around the region set up shop there to sell their wares and show off their skills. At Pelican Village, you will find everything from pottery to artwork, baked goods, handbags and handcrafted jewelry.

Vacationers looking for local crafts will not be disappointed. There are a number of shops scattered throughout the island that sell beautiful and original arts and crafts. Ann’s Craft Center in Pelican Village sells high-quality straw hats and handbags that have gained recognition around the world. Earthworks Pottery in St. Thomas sells unique yet functional handcrafted dinnerware.
