Barbados was discovered many centuries ago, but it wasn’t a popular tourist destination until the past couple of decades. The island has traditionally been a playground for the rich and famous, who flock to the island for a private and luxurious retreat. Recently, however, the island has become a draw for average vacationers who are attracted by its tranquility, white sandy beaches and beautiful, warm turquoise water.

Barbados has a rich and colorful history. The island actually formed hundreds of thousands of years ago when two land masses collided. Coral formed around the land to forge the two pieces together. Barbados’ sandy beaches are actually made of finely ground coral. The island was officially founded as a nation in 1625 by the British, but it was first inhabited 1000 years earlier by a tribe called the Arawaks. As Europeans began to settle on the island, they began taking slaves to construct towns and harvest the sugar cane, which was the island’s main industry. It wasn’t until 1834 that slavery was abolished.

The island still retains its historical roots through its beautiful architecture and museums, which house artifacts dating back to the first inhabitation of Barbados. Sugar cane still remains a main industry for the island, along with fishing. Festivals and events, including the Fish Festival, are held on the island annually to celebrate the history and culture of Barbados.
